This gene is located in an imprinted region of chromosome 11 near the insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) gene. This gene is only expressed from the maternally-inherited chromosome, whereas IGF2 is only expressed from the paternally-inherited chromosome. The product of this gene is a long non-coding RNA which functions as a tumor suppressor. Mutations in this gene have been associated with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome and Wilms tumorigenesis. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2015]
A study in mice demonstrated that the long non-coding RNA H19 plays multiple functions during myocardial ischemic injury [Luo et al. DOI:10.3389/fcell.2021.615950]. A study in Phormia regina maggots demonstrated that the H19 (asm), an RNA marker associated with sphingolipid metabolism and cellular development, was upregulated as maggots aged from 80 to 130 hours at 27.5 °C, and its expression pattern was consistently identified by differential gene expression, weighted gene co-expression network, and generalized linear model analyses as delineating maggot age for postmortem interval estimation [Lin et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pgen.1011948].
