This gene represents a snoRNA host gene that produces a non-coding RNA. Increased expression or amplification of this locus is associated with cancer progression and metastasis. This transcript regulates expression of genes involved in differentiation. It may act a molecular sponge for microRNAs. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed. A study in mice demonstrated that the ZFAS1 is upregulated following traumatic brain injury, and its inhibition reduces inflammatory response, apoptosis, and recovers neurological function [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.neuint.2023.105643]. In cardiovascular research, the ZFAS1 is upregulated in ischemic heart failure, causing impaired contractile function by repressing SERCA2a expression and leading to intracellular calcium overload [Chih-Fan Yeh et al.
