Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the piR-hsa-7193 was not identified among the 376 piRNAs initially characterized from six forensically relevant biological fluids (venous blood, menstrual blood, saliva, semen, vaginal secretions, and skin) using massively parallel sequencing [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.07.015]. A comprehensive review of non-coding RNA applications in forensic science also did not report the piR-hsa-7193 as a validated marker for body fluid identification, postmortem interval estimation, wound age estimation, age assessment, or cause of death analysis [Li et al. DOI:10.1093/fsr/owad003]. A study in human blood samples identified the piR-hsa-7193 as a piRNA positively correlated with aging, with Pearson correlation coefficients of r = 0.713 in massively parallel sequencing and r = 0.324 in RT-PCR validation [Fang et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-023-03028-8].
