A study in humans demonstrated that the expression profiles of piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) can discriminate forensically relevant biological fluids, with a panel of 37 piRNA candidates achieving a classification error rate of 0.04 in a PLS-DA model [Wang et al. The specific biomarker piR-hsa-8249 was not identified or validated among the 376 initially discovered piRNAs or the subsequently established candidate panels in this investigation. A study in humans using massively parallel sequencing identified the piR-hsa-8249 as an absolute specific marker for semen, demonstrating high specificity in pairwise comparisons with other body fluids/tissues [Liu et al.
