Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the piR-hsa-27283 was not identified among the 376 piRNAs initially characterized from venous blood, menstrual blood, saliva, semen, vaginal secretions, and skin using massively parallel sequencing, nor was it part of the validated 37-candidate panel or the five piRNAs selected for RT-qPCR validation in distinguishing these biological fluids [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.07.015]. A subsequent review of non-coding RNAs in forensic science also did not report the piR-hsa-27283 as a characterized piRNA for body fluid identification or other forensic applications such as postmortem interval estimation or cause of death determination [Li et al. DOI:10.1093/fsr/owad003]. A study in humans identified the piR-hsa-27283 as an absolute specific marker for venous blood, demonstrating high specificity in pairwise comparisons and being newly identified in this research [Liu et al.
