Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the piR-hsa-27491 was validated as significantly more highly expressed in menstrual blood (163-fold higher) than in venous blood and also showed a statistically significant, higher expression in saliva compared to vaginal secretions [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.07.015]. The literature review further notes its potential for distinguishing venous blood from menstrual blood and for distinguishing saliva from vaginal secretions [Li et al. DOI:10.1093/fsr/owad003]. A study in humans using massively parallel sequencing identified the piR-hsa-27491 as an absolute specific marker for semen, demonstrating high specificity in four out of five pairwise comparisons and high expression levels [Liu et al. DOI:10.3390/genes13091530].
