Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the expression profiles of the piR-hsa-28877 collectively exhibited acceptable discriminating ability for most forensically relevant biological samples, including venous blood, menstrual blood, saliva, semen, vaginal secretions, and skin [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.07.015]. A study in human venous blood samples demonstrated that the piR-hsa-28877 is positively correlated with aging (Pearson r = 0.599 in massively parallel sequencing and r = 0.112 in RT-PCR) and was identified as one of five age-related piRNAs for forensic age estimation [Fang et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-023-03028-8]. In a separate characterization of human forensic stains, the piR-hsa-28877 was newly identified as a stable reference gene for small RNA profiling across six body fluids/tissues, supporting its utility in data normalization [Liu et al. DOI:10.3390/genes13091530].
