A study in humans demonstrated that the piR-hsa-27622 is a potential biomarker for distinguishing venous blood from menstrual blood, as it was validated to be significantly more highly expressed in menstrual blood (66-fold higher) with no overlap in individual ΔCq values between the two biofluids [Wang et al.
