Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the expression profile of the piR-hsa-993 provided valuable information for discriminating forensically relevant biological fluids [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.07.015]. A study in humans using massively parallel sequencing of small RNAs in six forensic body fluids/tissues identified the piR-hsa-993 as an absolute specific marker for venous blood, where it was discovered in this research and demonstrated high specificity and very high expression [Liu et al. DOI:10.3390/genes13091530]. Another study in humans developed a forensic age estimation model for aged blood samples using massively parallel sequencing and real-time PCR, where the piR-hsa-993 was identified as an age-related piRNA positively correlated with aging in sequencing data [Fang et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-023-03028-8].
