Forensic Context

A study in human backspatter from firearms demonstrated that the SNORA66 was successfully detected and selected as the best-suited reference gene from a panel of nine candidates for normalizing miRNA expression data from blood in these samples [Grabmüller et al. DOI:10.1007/s12024-015-9695-3]. A separate evaluation of candidate reference genes for miRNA analysis in forensically relevant body fluids found that the SNORA66 was top-ranked in pooled sample analysis but showed large inter-individual differences, leading to a lower rank in individual sample analysis [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2014.08.005]. A review of the literature indicates that in animals, including humans and mice, small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are differentially expressed in the brain and many are further processed into small RNAs with miRNA-like functions, guiding RNA-modifying enzymes for 2'-O-methylation and pseudouridylation [Mattick DOI:10.1002/bies.201000028].
