Summary

This gene encodes an unspliced long non-coding RNA transcribed from the opposite strand to BACE1. The encoded transcript is thought to form an RNA duplex with BACE1 mRNA thereby regulating its expression and is also thought to promote post-transcriptional feed-forward regulation of BACE1. This may lead to increased levels of beta amyloid and increased senile plaque deposition, and therefore may play a role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2015]

Forensic Context

A review of non-coding RNAs in neurological diseases notes that the BACE1-AS triggers Aβ production and aggregation via BACE1 activity in Alzheimer's disease [Das et al. DOI:10.1080/21655979.2021.2003667], while a separate review on cardiovascular disorders reports that the BACE1-AS increases expression of toxic β-amyloid protein in endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes and stabilizes the BACE1 sense transcript to increase β-amyloid production in myocardial infarction [Chih-Fan Yeh et al. DOI:10.1186/s12929-020-00647-w].
